Ask The Mayor

Mayor Hal Richards

Q. - I am in charge of fundraising for a youth baseball team. I have seen organizations on the street corners and at intersections collecting money and wondered if our boys could stand there and collect money to help raise funds for uniforms and league fees. That way more boys are able to play even if their parents can't afford it.

Answer - Thanks for your inquiry.

I hope your fund raising can be successful. No child should have to be excluded because of his family's financial circumstances but fundraising on public streets is not permitted.

Terrell Ordinance 2202 prohibits charitable organizations from soliciting funds on public streets or roadways or any roadway or parking area of a public park. The ordinance is available here.

When we see or hear of soliciting on streets we take action to stop it.

With distracted drivers texting and such, it probably would not be safe for the kids to be exposed like this anyway.

Sincerely,

Hal Richards, Mayor
