Ask The Mayor
Q. - Several years ago, I served on
a committee representing the Terrell Police Association. Since that time
I wonder if Terrell hires only entry level police officers? The time and
expense necessary to place these officers on the street seems to be excessive.
Do we also seek experienced officers? This question also applies to the
dispatcher positions. Thanks for your response.
Answer - Thanks for your inquiry.
Two years ago we changed our process to allow the hiring of experienced
police officers. We refer to this as “lateral transfer.”
Because we are Civil Service, experienced police officers still must
pass our testing and be competitively ranked, but we have several current
police officers who came to us as lateral transfers. Because they have
experience, we have been able to forgo the academy training time and
fast-track their field training program.
Additionally, depending upon their experience level, they start at a
higher pay grade than that of a beginning police officer.
Since our dispatchers are not Civil Service, we have the option of hiring
experienced and trained dispatchers/911 personnel. However, these positions
are in very high demand, particularly considering that we are so close
to the metroplex market.
If you encounter any of our dispatch staff, be sure and thank them
for the critical job they do for Terrell.
